What to Expect From My Virtual Journal

February 11, 2022

When I started my photographer journey, I was amazed by how many photographers had a blog.

So many would take the time to post about each of their clients’ stories, include gorgeous photos they had taken, share those blogs on Pinterest, and strategize their content to garner new leads.

I have no clue why, but this stressed me out.

I had a blog before in college, where I wrote out my thoughts and musings. It was a wonderful space to put my thoughts down, and introspect on topics that mattered to me.

But it was just for fun, not for business. And besides posts that spoke strictly about owning a photography business, I didn’t see anything similar to what I had written before.

I didn’t feel a connection to the posts I saw of other photographers. And it took me a while to realize – it’s because they weren’t for me.

They were for prospective clients! And, for that audience, those posts were perfect. There’s nothing wrong with not resonating with content that is not designed for you.

For some reason, this discouraged me from starting my own blog – even though I wrote paragraphs under each of my Instagram posts and LOVED doing so.

I would scroll through business accounts and see self-proclaimed experts say that long form text on Instagram was not the move, and would laugh. Because, frankly, I didn’t care. If people didn’t want to read my captions, they didn’t have to; but for those that did, they were there. And you’d be surprised how many people read a few paragraphs, when they enjoy what you’re writing about.

Took a bit longer than it probably should to make that connection to blogging. I don’t worry about what I include in my captions, why not do the same for a blog?

So, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

This blog is going to grow and evolve over time, but for now, I envision sharing posts that fit into the following categories:

  1. General Musings
  2. Motivation and Inspiration
  3. Small Business Education
  4. Stories and Testimonials of those in the industry/creatives/clients

This may change! But for now, this is what I see myself creating. And because of this, I will refer to my blog as my “journal”. Because, it truly will be a digital archive of notes to you all.

Want to read anything in particular? Have questions about my work or ideas you’d like my opinion on? Send me a dm on Instagram or share a comment below, and I’ll write a little journal entry just for you. x

Much love,

Rachael
